In negen uur vliegt u van West-Europa naar tropisch Suriname, een ideaal vakantieland - als u palmenstranden en pretparken een tijdje kunt missen. Het land is rijk aan culturen die de knusse kleinstad Paramaribo een levendig en divers karakter geven. Dieper landinwaarts heerst de jungle, indrukwekkend en lieflijk tegelijk. De hoofdstad Paramaribo ligt aan de brede monding van de Surinameriver, 15 km van zee. De helft van de totale bevolking van Suriname woont in Paramaribo. Het klimaat is warm en vochtig, maar de bijna constante noordoost passaat brengt welkome verkoeling. De gemiddelde temperatuur is 27°C. Koud is het nooit. Ook 's nachts zakt de temperatuur zelden onder de 23°C. De bevolking bestaat onder andere uit de inheemsen (indianen), bosnegers, creolen, chinezen, hindostanen, javanen, boeroes (blanken), joden en libanezen. De economie stoelt vooral op de natuurlijke rijkdommen: bauxiet, goud, olie, hout, landbouw, zeevisserij en toerisme. |
