The holiday destination for Nature, Culture and Adventure

Suriname, the country to have a fantastic holiday – That is if you can do without the white sandy beaches and amusement parks for a while. Come and fly to Suriname, the country is enriched with many cultures, which gives its small capital Paramaribo its warm characteristics. Further into the interior, the jungle rules, impressive and calming at the same time. Travelers and tourists, embrace yourself in the tropical sun, adjust yourself to the somewhat slower pace of life located far from busy Europe or America and discover the secrets of the Amazon rainforest. Enjoy the clear midnight sky on the warm rocks along one of the many rivers and waterfalls, and just know one thing: there is a paradise, its here.

Surinam is big for a country with less than 500.000 people. The population density is low: 4 people per square km. A great part of the country is uninhabited. About 90% of the people live in a 50km wide strip along the Atlantic coast. The capital Paramaribo is situated at the estuary of the Suriname river, 15 km from the ocean. More than half of the national population lives in the capital.

The climate is warm and humid, but the north- east trade-wind cools it down. The average temperature is 27°C. It is never cold. Even at nights the temperature rarely drops below 23°C.

The population is mixed: Amerindian, negro, maroons, Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, boeroes (caucasian), jewish and Lebanese people inhabit our small country.

The economy is based on natural resources: bauxite, gold, oil, wood, agriculture, sea fishing and tourism.

Surinam is a remarkable country for many reasons.

Surinam is a remarkable country for many reasons. It is a multi-faceted society: with less than half a million inhabitants, the country is home to a number of population groups. Surinam is a fascinating mosaic of cultures, lifestyles and much beside. About three-quarters of the country is tropical rainforest. The Central Surinam Nature Reserve is the largest protected rainforest in the world, with unimaginable natural wealth. Wide rivers, rapids and waterfalls create an earthly Eden.

As part of a peace agreement (Peace of Breda) the Dutch would leave the island of Manhattan (yes, the one in New York, what was called in those days New Amsterdam) and England would give Suriname back to the Dutch.
