Marron village Santigron.
The Maroon village Santigron was founded around 1900 by the Sarramacaan Tangiba Kwao, after the abolition of slavery. The Saramaccans (also: Saramakaners, in the Saramaccan: Saamaka) are descendants of Maroons, fled slaves who, especially in the second half of the 17th century, moved into the forests of Suriname and initially settled along the Saramaca River. In Suriname, the Maroons are also called forest negroes and in official language also called 'boslandcreolen' (forestneger). In modern Surinamese language, some consider the term 'forestneger' to be derogatory, but it is a literal translation of 'busi-nengre', the word that the Maroons use themselves.
Santigron is located on the Saramaca River and is mainly populated by Saramaccaners, but also other forest negroes like the Aucaners and Matawai live in the village. The current number of residents in Santigron is 2000, of which 450 are permanent live in the village. Most of them, especially young people, work in the city. The villagers live mainly from agriculture, hunting, fishing and carvings. Despite the influences and proximity of the city, a large proportion of the residents of Santigron still maintain their rich African traditions. This is reflected in the traditional clothing: a kamisa for the man (a cloth, diagonally tied over the upper body) and a pangi (cloth folded like a skirt) for the woman. Also in cultural expressions such as the Awasa (escape dance), Sonque (fish dance) and Soesa (competition dance) that are accompanied on Apinti and Agida drums many African aspects can be found. The residents live in harmony with nature and have a great knowledge from medicinal herbs from the jungle.
In Santigron you can find traditional places such as the women's house, where women are isolated during their menstruation, the offering place (Faka-paw) and the Honourbow (Ereboog, Azam-paw). The Azam paw is close to the village the Saramacca river and consists of a kind of gate with hanging palm leaves. This protects the village against evil spirits that people can carry with them. Most villagers have been converted to Christianity since the 19th century, but combine this with traditions of one's own faith and rituals.
The Santigron village council consists of six captains, one female and several basjas (assistants of the captains). Although the captain is recognized as an authority by the government, his power is not great. Most conflicts are solved in long-term discussions (Krutu's) in which all residents of the village can participate. The society of forest negroes is therefore quite democratic.
You will experience that the local population is fully involved in the SANTIGRON EXPERIENCE TOURS when the hostess and host of the Santigron Eco Parc welcome you. After consuming a welcome drink and getting to know the manager and hostess, you will be picked up by the local guide for a tour of the village. During this walk you will get a good impression of the history of it village, the traditional life of the Maroons and their culture.
After the tour there is a delicious Marron lunch at the Santigron Eco Parc, consisting of rice and peanut rice (can only be enjoyed at the Marrons), fresh vegetables, salads, meat, fish and fruit for dessert. Everything is prepared in our own kitchen.
After lunch you make a cultural dance with supported by Apintie drums, all players and dancers come from Santigron, so authentic. Then follows a beautiful boat trip on the Sarramaca River (there are life jackets, umbrellas and ponchos available). During the boat trip through the jungle you have a great chance to come face to face with the jungle dwellers such as monkeys, sloths, tropical birds and perhaps a caiman. We make a stop at the Maroon village Haarlem for a small village walk and there is a possibility to swim in a creek along the river.
After returning to Santigron there is a cold beer or otherwise, again free, at the local bar. Around 18:00 you will be taken back to Paramaribo with airco bus.
Transportation by bus and boat, non alcoholic drinks, alcoholic drinks, snacks, fruit, lunch and entrance fees.

- Bepaalde tours gaan (bijna) nooit door omdat het minimum aantal deelnemers niet wordt gehaald;
