General info

    Historical and industrial heritage
The Warappakreek is almost completely excavated in 2009 during a 5 months project, the creek had been increasingly abandoned since the abolition of slavery and then clogged. This unique situation has ensured that nature has been able to take its course undisturbed. The first part of the trip we sail through the narrow, green creek. Sometimes through tunnels of the overhanging trees with continually changing vegetation. On the way occasionally stopping to view tangible memories from the past. The creek ends in the Atlantic Ocean, where we get off for a walk.

Program

    Day 1
Departure from the city by bus for a nice trip to Alkmaar. We are crossing the Wijdenbosch bridge and can already do so slowly acclimatize in the district of Commewijne. From Alkmaar departure by boat for a boat trip on the Commewijne river of about 50 minutes to Bakkie (Reynsdorp).
We take a walk through Bakkie and visit the small private museum. A large collection has already been established here with old bottles, prints, maps, paintings and many utensils. Also the most important documents from Suriname such as the Act of Recognition of Suriname (November 25, 1975) and the law abolishing slavery signed by King Willem III of the Netherlands.
Then we go to the state-owned Alliance. Information is given about the history of Alliance, which was created by merging, among others, the plantations Sporksgift and Lodewijksburg.
We take a walk along the old director's house, the lock and along the houses of the contractors. Make it too we have a tour behind a tractor over the still working citrus plantation. We use the warm one in a small warung lunch.
The highlight of the day is the boat trip through the Warappakreek. The first part of the trip we sail through the narrow, green creek. Sometimes through tunnels of the overhanging trees with continually changing vegetation.
Along the way there are a number of stops such as the newly discovered steam sugar factory with machines from 1830. The remnants are unique with a sugar cane press, steam engines and steam boilers. The factory is very easy accessible from the creek via a 3 minute trail through the Parwa-Mangrove forest via the old ring dams. Furthermore, during the tour we see old locks, the original ring dams and an old camel bridge.
The slave past also sounds during this trip through the remnants of the toxic planted as a fence cacti against runaways on the ring dams. In addition, during the slavery time the miles-long Warappa Canal in which the creek passes to the ocean by the slaves dug by hand.
When the creek changes into the Warappa Canal, the environment changes drastically. More panoramic view and unique landscape with mysterious dead trees. We are now entering an area where many different birds can be seen, including red ibises.
The creek flows into the Atlantic Ocean from where a sandy beach can be reached. This is a beautiful one rugged walking beach with miles of visibility. The low tide mudbanks on which thousands of birds can be viewed at the same time. We go for a walk and enjoy the peace and space.
After this we go back through the creek, which has a very different appearance due to the change in the tide. We say goodbye to the people who booked a Warappakreek day trip and go fresh up for diner Day 2
At Bakkie you make use of breakfast and lunch today. You can organize your day yourself. At the end of the day you join the people who return from the day tour Warappakreek and you return by boat and bus back to Paramaribo
