Diabetics - Preparation trip to suriname for diabetics
People are more prone to illness and infections when traveling. Other food, other hygienic conditions, different climate are the cause. With diabetes you also have a greater chance of getting disrupted. The sugar level can get confused (too high or too low) because of the following causes:
other food and drinks, food with other nutritional value (in Suriname a lot of stir-fired and much more oil is used during the preparation of food than in the Netherlands),
other climate (higher temperature and higher humidity),
another day rhythm, a siesta in the heat of the day,
other activities, perhaps more rest (good reading in the hammock) or less rest (a trip to the interior of Suriname),
time difference, the famous jet lag,
infections,
motion sickness.
You can simply receive all vaccinations for a trip. The annual flu syringe can be arranged through your doctor or specialist. Please take a moment to read my blog about vaccinations and vaccinations. If you want to be vaccinated or vaccinated, please do so at least 6 weeks before departure. Make an appointment in time with your doctor or specialist.
A common uncomfortable trip is the diarrhea. Fate and other food can be the cause. 10% of all travelers are temporarily suffering from diarrhea. Diarrhea can seriously upset the sugar level, which causes a major disruption. Therefore pay attention to what you eat and drink. If you do get diarrhea, you can use ORS. Check your blood sugar regularly because in ORS there is a lot of sugar.
If you have type 1 diabetes and therefore use insulin, take antibiotics with you. This is to prevent complications of diarrhea. Start with this, after the first (watery) diarrhea.
With diabetes you are more likely to get infections. Good foot and wound hygiene is always very important. Do not walk barefoot, wear comfortable shoes, wear water shoes in the river or creek and check your feet daily for wounds. Have you had diabetes for a long time and your nerves have already been affected? Then you have an extra increased risk of infections. You may then be able to take an antibiotic treatment with you to treat starting inflammation. Discuss this with your doctor or specialist.
Check, especially if you use insulin, more often the sugar level. Tell a travel companion, the tour guide about your situation and make sure you have resources such as sugar and glucagon. If you book a tour, please mention that you are a diabetic patient during your booking. Fever often also disrupts the level of sugar in the blood. Therefore visit a doctor in case of illness.
Insulin must not freeze, so always carry in your hand luggage. Insulin is a liquid that falls under the strict liquid control of hand luggage. Always bring a note from the doctor or pharmacy. Insulin loses its effect at high temperatures. Therefore, keep insulin in a refrigerator or cooler bag. If you are going to visit the jungle of Suriname for more days, ask if the resort where you want to stay has a fridge. Never put insulin directly in the sun. Do not use the insulin if it is discolored or cloudy.
Since July 2018 I started this blog for information about Suriname. Some contributions are from guests of my resort, Kekemba Resort Paramaribo. For the moment the blog is only in english.
