Green Heritage Fund Suriname
Monique Pool has been operating since 2005 with her own organization Green Heritage Fund Suriname (GHFS) , and has now saved hundreds of sloths of death. Pool was declared CNN-Hero by CNN in 2016. This exposure has led to the establishment of the Sloth Wellness Center in Groningen, Suriname.
Sea containers
The center is impressive. It is a mix of wood and old sea containers. The containers act as intensive care and bedrooms for the volunteers. The center is located in the woods so that the sloths can be easily deployed after their recovery. In future, other animals will also be treated.
CNN Heroes
The GHFS has been able to fund the construction of the center largely because Monique was nominated for CNN Heroes, an awards show for ordinary people who do something special for their community. An American volunteer had given her up for the award. CNN has come to Suriname to shot a report. Due to her top 10 placement, she could receive an award and a big donation.
Sloth Wellness Center
The Sloth Wellness Center is not officially opened. Its location is near Resort Bloemendaal. From Bloemendaal take the main road towards Groningen, take the second road on the left. There is no proper sign at the side of the road.
